FAQ answers

General

How long will it take me to learn to drive? How many lessons will I need?
Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice. Learners who prepare this way, with a combination of plenty of professional training and plenty of practice, do better in the test.

I am ready for my first driving lesson, what can I expect?
You will receive a Bee Prepared information pack. Your Instructor will check both parts of your provisional licence and your eyesight. For beginners we will teach you the functions of main controls of the car and you will drive the car away and pull over on the left by the end of your 1st lesson. If you have previous driving experience then you will be assessed to see how you drive and then we can develop a teaching plan.

Can I start driving lessons with an instructor before passing my theory test?
Yes. We recommend you take practical lessons while preparing for your theory test. The combination of practical experience with theoretical learning should help you to pass the theory test.

What is your lesson cancellation policy?
After you have made an appointment with your Instructor, you may need to reschedule it. If this is the case, we expect at least 48 hours notice. This enables the Instructor to attempt to rebook the appointment slot. If you are unable to give 48 hours notice, the appointment may be charged for at the discretion of your Instructor. Sometimes your Instructor may need to reschedule your appointment at short notice. If this happens we will endeavour to give 48 hours notice and if this is not possible you will receive a discount on the rescheduled lesson.

Theory test

Can I take my car theory test before my 17th birthday?
Sorry but No! You can however book your theory test before your 17th birthday, as long as you have applied for and received your provisional licence. Candidates in receipt of Disability Mobility Allowance at the higher rate may take their theory test before their 17th birthday as long as they have a valid provisional licence.

What does the theory test entail? How many questions are there? and what is the pass mark?
The theory test is made up of a multiple choice section and a hazard perception section. You need to pass both sections to pass.
For the multiple choice section you are allowed 57 minutes and need to answer 43 of 50 questions correctly.
For the hazard perception section there are 14 video clips containing 15 developing hazards. To achieve a high score you need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five and to pass you must score at least 44 out of a total of 75.
Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your practical driving test.

Do I need to take a theory test if I already have a full motorbike licence?
Yes, you will need to take a new theory test if you want a licence for a new category of vehicle.
If, however, you want to upgrade within a vehicle category you will not normally need to take a theory test. For example, if you have a full automatic car licence and you want a manual car licence you will not have to take a theory test.
Please check with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) if you are unsure if you should take a theory test.

Practical test

How long is the Practical test?
The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes.Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions. You will then start your practical driving test which will include some specific manoeuvres.

Am I allowed to make any mistakes?
Yes you are! Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.

Can I use an automatic car for the driving test?
Yes. If a person passes a test in an automatic car then they are restricted to driving vehicles with automatic transmission thereafter. A full automatic licence acts as a provisional manual licence.

Can I use my own car for the driving test?
Yes but there are a number of vehicles that can't be used for a practical driving test for safety reasons.
The minimum vehicle requirements are listed on the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) website.
